Pardons: There were basically two types, 'conditional', where the convict was free as long as they remained in the colony, and absolute pardon, where the convict's sentence was entirely remitted and were free within and outside the colony. Certificates of Freedom: was only available to a convict with a finite sentence ie; 7, 10, or 14 years. A person with a life sentence could receive a 'pardon' but not a Certificate of Freedom. click on photo to view Tickets of Leave: allowed a convict to work for themselves but had to remain in a specified area, reporting daily and attending divine worship every sunday, and the men were allowed to send for their wives provided they had the money for it. Convict transportation to NSW ended in 1840, Tasmania 1853 and the last ship was in 1868 to Western Australia. |
