Attestation Paper

Between 1914 and 1919, over three hundred thousand men and women served with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) outside Australia in various theatres of the Great War of 1914-1919. Nearly 60, 000 were killed, and over 200,000 wounded or rendered unfit by disease. Out of respect to families no records under seventy years will be listed.

World War I serVice records usually contain the following documents: The attestation paper was completed by the person on enlistment and normally gives next-of-kin, employment details, marital status, age, place of birth and physical description. Form B103 shows movements and transfers between units and, if a soldier was injured, when and how the soldier was injured and where treatment was received. Correspondence between the Department of Defence and the soldiers next of kin may include notification of wounds or death, awards and medals, and questions about the whereabouts of the serViceman or woman.
