Spencer Baird: of the Smithsonian. A naturalist, zoologist, and scientific administrator at the center of 19th-century science, Baird (1823-1887) was the second secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, initiator of what became the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and director of the US National Museum. His life and achievements are recounted here.
