Aliment Decrees

When an unmarried woman gave birth to an illegitimate child, very often she brought an action against the father for aliment, claiming for inlying expenses, whilst she was pregnant, and also for financial support for the child, the following are extracts from the Sheriff's courts for Fifeshire. The records are held at Scottish Record Office (West Register House).

Cupar Sheriff Court Aliment Decrees, 1830-1854

BLACK, Mary of Lauriston, Falkirk, v John Baird, mason, form at Woodend (parish of Polmont), presently residing at Grange (Abdie). Female born 9 July 1843. [Ref 4/25 P559 (309)]

KEDDIE. Elspet, or Euphemia, residing at Methil, v John Baird, coal shipper, residing at Kennoway. Male, born 3 June 1847. [Ref 4/25 P710 (414)]

DONALDSON, Robert: Merchant in St Andrews, married to Katharini Baird Disp and Assig in favour of children: sons, Robert (eldest), William (2nd), James (3rd and youngest), plus legacies to daughter, Janet Donaldson. 21 Nov 1772 [Ref B65/22/36]

Presbytrie Booke of Kirkcaldie 1638

In Auchtertool a paltry difference between the minister Mr William Bell and James Baird the Laird of Halyairds about a seat claimed by a member of the Balmuto family, led to bitter recriminations of which an amusing specimen is given in a letter to James Baird Advocate on pages 196, 197, 198, 199, 200 and recorded in the book 4th March 1641

Kilcaldie June 6th 1650, Compeired James Bairdner confessed fornication with Janet Kilgour, she also compeiring, confronted constantlie denyed. He is appoynted to satisfie for his confessed fornication and she continewed for further tryell
Kilcaldie August 14th 1650. James Bairdner it is ordeaned that he be gravlie spoken to in declairing his repentance in Auchterdirren befoir the congregatioun and Janet Kilgour to be put to hir oath in time convenient.
Dysert September 4th 1650 Compeired Janet Kilgour who confessed fornicatioun with James Bairdner, whilk she had often denyed befoir Ordered hir to sitt more dayes tan Ordinar bot remits hir to hir minister.

Fife Photographers to 1900

PATON, James: Nethertown Street, Dunfermline, 1866-67 with James Baird as his partner, commenced business in Nethertown Street on Jun 4 1866 under the firm of PATON & BAIRD, this partnership was dissolved by mutual consent on Dec 21 1866, and Paton continued the business under his own name, re-opening the studio, after "extensive alterations," on Mar 7 1867, by Jun 1867 he had left Dunfermline, and was in business as a photographer in Linlithgow

Some Baird connections to Fife

Andrew Baird 1st of Auchmedden son of Sir Gilbert born 1475, married abt 1519 to Bessy Learmonth of Balcomy, born abt 1494
This is a name arising from lands in Berwickshire. The earliest family of note were the Learmonths of Ercildoune in the Merse, the family married into the Dairsies of Fife and thereby established the principal line of the family in that county. Sir James Learmonth of Dairsie was Master to the Household of James V, and provost of St Andrews in 1446. The family also acquired the lands of Balcomie in Fife.

James Baird Ist of Newbyth Haddington, born 1585, died 1655, married Berthia Dempster of Pitliver Fifeshire born abt 1594, married 1618, Father: John Dempster.

Sir William Baird 1st Bart Newbyth Haddington, born 1654, died 1737 married Helen Gilmore in 1678, then remarried in 1711 to Margaret St Clair of Dysart Fifeshire b 1688, d 1756. Mother: Margaret Cockburn Father: Henry St Clair.

William Baird VII of Auchmedden, born 30th August 1701 and married 1720 to Anne Duff born 1705 daughter of Duff of Dipple and sister to Lord Braco and William Earl of Fife, he also had ties to provences of Fife which were given to him by the late Countess of Fife, who had inherited the provences from Alexander Souter at the succession of the 5th Earl.

William Baird

Wiliam Baird was the son of Alexander Baird and Jean Moffat, Lanarkshire. [Gartsherrie Bairds] he took over the business after his father's death in 1833, and served as MP (Conservative) for the Falkirk Burghs 1841-46, he was a director of the Caledonian Railway Company and the Forth and Clyde Canal. He married Janet Johnston in 1840, and bought the Elie estate Fife in 1853, and built the present stone-walled causeway and extended the pier.
